During the same year I started my specialization in one of the most desired departments - Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dental Medicine. I graduated in 2019.

In 2016, I spent a month on an exchange program at UTHSC Tennessee, USA, where I specialized in orthodontic sector for the majority of time.

In 2017, on my own initiative, I visited the Department of Orthodontics - VCU Richmond, USA.

I am a member of:

Hygiene

Daily cleaning routine of the teeth with a brush and toothpaste is an irrevocable ritual of the modern person. We all know how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene, even though it should be noted that during orthodontic treatment, brushing the teeth becomes even more important than usual. Because food can easily get stuck around braces, it can cause staining, tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. To avoid these potential problems from occurring, here are some simple but effective tips.

Which toothbrush is right for you?

You have the freedom to choose any brush you like. Brand doesn't matter. Replace your old brush with a new one every 3 months, as the worn surface of the filaments will no longer provide you with optimal cleaning. Whether you brush your teeth with a manual or electric brush is again a matter of personal preference. Use them correctly and both will do a great job.

How often should you brush your teeth?

It is recommended to do it 3-4 times a day, and you can follow this improvised schedule:

  • As soon as you wake up in the morning, brush your teeth for about 5 minutes. Be thorough, remember that the plaque is persistent and has had all night to build up.
  • Brush again after breakfast. This time, however, in a hurry and only to remove the leftover food.
  • After you have lunch, do the same. If you are at work or school, start this activity as soon as you get home.
  • Before going to bed, brush your teeth carefully. Clean the interdental spaces with floss, douche or a specialized interdental brush.

What toothpaste to choose?

Avoid frequent use of whitening toothpaste. Choose those that contain fluoride, as it effectively protects and restores tooth structure. To motivate yourself brushing your teeth longer, select a toothpaste with a flavour you like.

Remember to use dental floss. Although it would be more difficult to clean your teeth while wearing braces, it’s worth to make the effort.

Include in your cleaning routine a mouthwash. In patients prone to frequent canker sores, it can become a decisive factor for their comfort during orthodontic treatment. Most products on the market are made primarily to refresh your breath. Remember that those with an antibacterial effect can cause brown staining of the tongue and fillings because they contain chlorhexidine. Therefore, you can use them for no more than 14 days. For example, Eludril and Gum Paroex fall into this category.
